You Me At Six (often styled youmeatsix) are a British pop punk band from Weybridge, Surrey, formed in 2004. The current line up consists of vocalist Josh Franceschi, rhythm guitarist and backing vocalist Max Helyer, lead guitarist Chris Miller, bassist Matt Barnes and drummer Dan Flint.[5]

The band rose to fame in 2007 with the success of their debut album, Take Off Your Colours, which included popular singles such as "Save It for the Bedroom", "Finders Keepers" and "Kiss and Tell". The latter two peaked at #33 and #42 respectively in the official UK Singles Chart.[6] They were nominated for "Best British Band" at the 2008 and 2009 Kerrang! Awards, losing both times to metal band, Bullet for My Valentine.[7] The band released their second studio album, titled Hold Me Down on 11 January 2010,[8] which reached #5 on the UK album chart. This album included the popular single "Underdog", which reached #49 on the UK singles chart, and "Liquid Confidence" is due for release on 19 April 2010 as the third single from the album.

[edit] History

[edit] Early years

Formed in 2004, You Me At Six remained small for around two years. During an interview with Sam Darcy, bassist Matt Barnes said that You Me At Six started out travelling the UK on the Megabus to ensure they got to all of their early gigs. In their early material they incorporated elements of screaming, as expressed in early demos such as "Promise, Promise", "New Jersey", "Noises" and "This Turbulence Is Beautiful". Another early You Me At Six song was called "The Liar and The Lighter", this song was entirely acoustic and showed the bands early versatility with different genres, when taken concomitantly with the screaming on other early songs. Their first release was a four track E.P in 2006 entitled We Know What It's Like To Be Alone. They then released a four-track EP at the start of 2007, with the songs "The Rumour", "Gossip", "Noises" and "This Turbulence Is Beautiful". They played many local and smaller venues throughout 2006, such as Backline Studios in Guildford and Facebar in Reading, building large local support, then in 2007 began playing larger venues. One of the first major breakthroughs came for the band when playing to a sold-out show at the Camden Underworld in February 2007, then later with the opening slot of Slam Dunk Festival 2007 (which they later went on to headline in 2009) Their support slot with Paramore at Colchester Arts Centre also drew the attention of major media, such as Kerrang!

[edit] Take Off Your Colours

In November 2007 You Me At Six were signed by Slam Dunk Records[9], an independent record label who produced and promoted the band's debut album Take Off Your Colours. Released in stores and for digital download on 6 October 2008, the album entered the UK Albums Chart at #25 the same week. They released a single the previous week on 29 September entitled "Jealous Minds Think Alike" where they played an in store performance at Banquet Records in Kingston. The release of their debut album was accompanied by a promotional tour beginning 15 October 15, in which they headlined the London Astoria, a venue which they had hoped they'd be able to headline before it would be knocked down in 2009.[10] They also performed in-store gigs at various HMV outlets across the UK to promote the album, the first being the HMV on Oxford Street, the day of the album's release.

You Me At Six re-released "Save It for the Bedroom" as before they had only released a limit of a thousand copies. The video for "Save It for the Bedroom" went to number 1 in the charts on Kerrang!.[citation needed]

A brand new single called "Finders Keepers" was released on 25 May 2009. The video received regular plays on Kerrang! TV and Scuzz. It followed "Save It for the Bedroom" to number 1 in the Kerrang! Rock Top 40. It was also a huge commercial success for the band and was seemingly their breakthrough single, reaching #33 in the UK Singles Chart.

A deluxe edition of Take Off Your Colours with five bonus tracks and the videos for "Finders Keepers" and "Kiss and Tell" was released on 21 July 2009 in the U.S. and will be released on 14 September 2009, in the UK. The band will also release an all-new single "Kiss and Tell" on 7 September 2009. In this album we also see the original recordings of 'Gossip', 'The Rumour', also their debut single 'Save it for the Bedroom' released, after the controversial re-rerecordings in their debut album.

You Me At Six played 126 dates in 2009[11], culminating — after their two sold-out headline tours and a slew of festivals — with a special guest support slot with Tennessean rock band Paramore, across their 15 date European Stadium Tour. This culminated with an audience of 12,500 at London's Wembley Arena, where they played a selection of tracks from their first album, and the new promotional single "The Consequence", and were joined by leadsinger, Josh's, sister and solo artist Elissa Franceschi. They also came onstage for Paramore's finale, marking the end of a highly fruitful year for the band.[12]

[edit] Hold Me Down

On 11 November 2009, Josh Franceschi announced via his Twitter account that their second album was completed, and would be released in early 2010.[13] AbsolutePunk.net later announced the album would be titled Hold Me Down and we be released through Virgin Records on 11 January 2010.[14] The band then announced shortly afterwards that they would be making the song, "The Consequence" available for free digital download from their official website.[15] The Album was recorded in Reading as was their previous record Take Off Your Colours.[16] The album debuted at #5 in the UK album charts, however it managed to hit #4 for the mid-week charts.

Later, the band announced that the first official new single from Hold Me Down is titled "Underdog". The song was later made available for free streaming on the band's myspace.

Also in November 2009 You Me at six were involved in the myspace bash, funded by myspace to put on a gig at a secondary school anywhere in the country. There was a competition on myspace to vote for your school and the school with the most votes got the gig with YM@6 and Chipmunk. The lucky school was Highworth Grammar School.

[edit] Underdog EP

On 28 Jan, the band announced that they would be releasing an iTunes exclusive bundle, including the first single of their new album Hold Me Down, "Underdog". The Underdog EP would also include acoustic version of the track, and an all-new b-side titled "Fact-tastic" which portrays the bands feelings about certain "losers" who are easily influenced by mistruth spread by the use of forums about bands, in particular reference to the popular website Punktastic.com [17].

[edit] 2010 Tours and Dates

You Me At Six kicked off their year playing a launch show in Kingston — originally intended to be an instore gig at Banquet Records, it was quickly upgraded to the new Hippodrome[18] — in support of their new album Hold Me Down on 11 January. As of February they have played 3 dates, including, also, an HMV instore and an HMV event headline promoting new British music at the Relentless Garage London. They have announced that they will be playing several festivals including Punkspring in Japan, the whole Vans Warped Tour[19]; and are about to support Paramore on all Soundwave dates, as well as on Paramore's tour.[20]

They have completed their third sell-out headline tour in support of their second album Hold Me Down. They were joined by Sean Smith and Elissa Franceschi on selected dates. In Belfast, Matt told GiggingNI.com how it was "exciting to see how much you've grown from a year and a half ago" [21].

In August 2010 the band will be performing on the main stage at the Leeds and Reading festivals.[22] The band also mentioned during their gigs in Manchester, Leeds, Southampton, Nottingham, Norwich, London and Glasgow that they would be re-touring the UK in December 2010. During the Glasgow gig it was also mentioned that there was likely to be an Edinburgh tour date.
